I love how someone can be such a kindred, yet work so differently.

My friend Jake is putting up paintings in Lone Pine as I type this.

He is pretty much amazing.
Jake paints with oils. He bundles them up in his bike cart, and bundles himself, and rides (usually in the morning) to Shevlin Park, or Tin Pan Alley, and he paints.  It's plein air, but kinda more than that.   His paintings are much more expressionistic, they capture things Jake Sees.  And Jake sees things differently (more on this later...). There is urgency and quickness to the method of capturing that which is often fleeting, but Jake does it with such excitement and non-attachement, with genuineness and gentleness.

We keep talking about going on a little trek to work on the Aspens as they turn and sparkle.  It's hard for me to take tiny bits of paper and an iron out in the woods though, so I would be happy to just sit and watch Jake work his magic.

And Then...

The end of summer approaches rapidly, and life has been one big blur.
A good blur.



Here is a list of what's happening.

• Day 22 of a bikram yoga challenge. I am planning on every day until:
• Army Owl arrives in Central Oregon on the 28th of September.
• Going to see Band of Horses tomorrow in Eugene with PoHo friends.
• Sending my Apple to the Doctor. Obviously the axiom doesn't apply here.
• Finishing art for Person, Tree, House- First Friday's theme, and then-
• Moving art from the hospital on Thursday to have a solo show hosted by Lone Pine Coffee Roasters, which will be hopping as well on First Friday.
• Floating Bonnie Rait and Taj Mahal this weekend.
• Training beginning for the Seattle Half Marathon in November.
• Photo shoots with Miss Cyr and Jo before Cyr's show September 18th (gonna be stinking amazing).
• Art for India Rise Up painting party comes around again on the 26th.

Lone Pine

The Lone Pine Coffee Roasters have officially opened their shop in Tin Pan Alley. It's a beautifully cozy spot filled with "the aromatic bean."

Next door to my studio space, the Lone Pine Coffee Roaster is moving in. Scott, the owner and roaster of beans, asked me to paint on his wall. We are putting text from a early twentieth century definitive handbook on coffee- the specifics are words, phrases, names for "the magical bean."

I got a lot of practice playing with text and fonts during my job at MTSU painting banners for the rec center- and this little project is a meditative kind of exercise in the beauty of letters... I am only done with three out of thirteen lines- but here is a peak at the progress.

My favorite phrase- "the restorative of sparkling wit."
